Near West Theatre

Been working. Workin' my tail off actually. That itself seems a bit unusual for this time of year, but not unwelcome. The past two weeks have been spent pouring time and energy into Near West Theatre's production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. I was asked just over two weeks to help out on costumes and I figured it couldn't be that bad. I accepted and have been making all kinds of foam stuff since then as well as helping out wherever I could.

As usual, I'm not going to BS you, the 2 or 3 people who stumble upon this. It was pretty damn hellish, but that's work in general. You're trading your life, your time here on this planet and your energy to make something, in the case of theater, something that only has to last as long as the run of the show. Movies are the same way, if it's held together by bubblegum and a prayer it doesn't matter as long as they get the shot. Well, I had all kinds of foam things to make, mostly "second string" objects and foam headpieces that represent the enchanted castle objects... salt and pepper shakers, feather duster handles, desserts, a pork chop, bleu cheese, a creamer, a sugar bowl, tree heads, and even tree branches.

If it weren't for the cast and most of the staff I would write theater off entirely. The cast was wonderful to work with, and they had me choked up when they were thanking me. I guess I'm just a big softy or something, but if any of them read this, thank YOU. You made it worthwhile.

And lest I forget, big thanks to Audra for coming down and helping out a bit too.
